55 million years ago, the first members of the horse family known as the Hyracotherium, existed through the forests that covered North America . These small, three toed, dog sized mammals remained forest browsers until changing climate conditions allowed grasslands to expand. Eventually approximately 20 million years ago, new species began to evolve. Some, but not all, became the larger more familiar beautiful horses we know and love today.
40,000 years ago when man began to settle in Ice Age Europe, before horses were beasts of burden, they were pray and hunted for food.
10,000 years ago prehistoric remains suggest that as the Ice Age ended in Western Europe, so did the survival of the wild horse. However, short grasses on the vast lands of Eastern Europe and Central Asia made for a thriving environment in which the domesticated Equus Ferus Caballus was born.
Today the horses contribution to civilization is unmatched.
These powerful machines, powered by grass, equipped with a brain to understand subtle commands and the desire to obey them , have profoundly changed the way we travel, trade, work, play and fight.
The horse who has once accompanied us on the battlefield, has evolved even further to serve us in a more civilized manner. They are here to guide us as we go to war with the enemies of our mental, emotional and physical existences. For this we shall be forever grateful. ~Victoria L Slattery
